January 16, 2012

Today is the Federal holiday to celebrate the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I’ve been watching and listening to this:

Special: Dr Martin Luther King, Jr., in His Own Words

On this day especially, I’m grateful for:

  • My paternal grandparents, who let a young, black professor stay at their home one time. And who taught me how important it is to have an education.
  • My maternal grandparents, who insisted on inequality yet had some of the most complex relationships with and respect for black people that I’ve ever known in the Arkansas delta.

These are the cultures, perspectives and the values that make me who I am today.
