I won’t go into details about why I am against the proposed SOPA and PIPA legislation. I think the District Dispatch, from the American Library Association’s Washington office, does a good job explaining why this legislature is not good for American citizens and creators.
On a fundamental level, human learn and express by remixing. We share, we steal, we build off each other’s intellectual work. The Internet is a powerful tool that can facilitate creativity, learning and access to information that is much needed by folks all across the world. We need to try, as much as possible, to keep it just that: a tool to facilitate knowledge, creativity and sharing.
Here are a few more very good, brief explanations about why this is not good for creators. Remember–if you create something, you probably own copyright for it (or did you create a transformative work by remixing someone else’s creative expression?) and you need to take action to determine how you want to share your work with others. Educate yourself.
